Managing a UX team is an exciting and challenging adventure. From creating a shared vision to implementing innovative solutions, every step requires a mix of leadership skills, creativity, and empathy.

I have worked in various types of companies, but at Aprende Institute, I faced the biggest challenge of my career: building the best UX team from scratch and shifting the company’s mindset to be user-centered. This was an incredible challenge that significantly contributed to my professional growth. Let’s keep moving forward.

1. Building a Shared Vision

One of the first steps to effectively managing a UX team is establishing a clear and shared vision. This vision should be inspiring and provide a clear direction on where we want to go as a team.

Tip: Conduct brainstorming sessions where all team members can contribute their ideas. This not only fosters creativity but also ensures that everyone feels part of the process and committed to the final vision.

2. Fostering a Culture of Collaboration

In a UX team, collaboration is key. Designers, researchers, and developers need to work together to create products that truly solve users’ problems.

Tip: Implement collaboration tools like Figma or Miro and organize regular co-design workshops. These practices not only improve the quality of work but also strengthen relationships within the team.

3. Promoting Experimentation and Continuous Learning

The UX world is constantly evolving, and it’s vital for the team to stay updated with the latest trends and technologies. Encouraging a mindset of continuous learning and experimentation can lead to surprising discoveries.

Tip: Encourage your team to attend conferences, take online courses, and experiment with new tools and techniques. You can even organize “innovation days” where the team can work on personal projects or explore new ideas without the constraints of day-to-day tasks.

4. Listening and Empathizing

Empathy is a fundamental skill for any UX leader. Understanding the needs and concerns of your team allows you to support them more effectively and create a positive work environment.

Tip: Hold regular one-on-one meetings to listen to each team member’s concerns and suggestions. Ensure they feel valued and supported in their professional growth.

5. Setting Clear and Measurable Goals

Defining clear and measurable objectives helps keep the team focused and motivated. These goals should align with the overall vision and be achievable.

Tip: Use methodologies like OKRs (Objectives and Key Results) to set clear goals and measure progress. Review them regularly and adjust strategies as needed.

6. Celebrating Achievements

Recognizing and celebrating successes, both big and small, is vital for maintaining high team morale. These moments of celebration also strengthen the sense of community and belonging.

Tip: Organize celebration meetings to acknowledge the team’s achievements. It can be something as simple as a team lunch or a shoutout in company-wide meetings.

7. Adapting to Change

The digital environment is constantly changing, and it’s essential for your UX team to be agile and adaptable. Being open to feedback and willing to pivot when necessary is crucial for long-term success.

Tip: Foster a culture of continuous feedback and maintain flexibility in project plans. Use agile methodologies to iterate quickly and adapt to new circumstances.

Managing a UX team can be challenging, but with vision, collaboration, and a focus on continuous growth, great things can be achieved. I hope these tips help guide your team towards success.

See you next time!

Redesign the referral program at Aprende Institute

One of my challenging tasks at Aprende Institute was to redesign the referral program. This program is important because it generates part of the revenue, and we need to understand the motivations of the students to refer others, as well as the needs of guests to convert them into students. This is an end-to-end product that was required careful consideration.
